artificial heart
Mechanical blood circulator
An artificial heart is a mechanical device implanted to replace or assist a failing human heart.
Some are permanent replacements; others serve as bridges while patients await transplants.
The term extends to external machines that temporarily take over heart function during surgery: She was on an artificial heart for six hours during the operation.
