HBCU

Tuskegee's institutional type

HBCU stands for Historically Black College or University—institutions of higher education established before 1964 primarily to serve African American students, who were largely excluded from other colleges.

About a hundred HBCUs still operate, including Howard, Spelman, and Morehouse.

She's proud to be an HBCU graduate.

The term emphasizes historical mission rather than current enrollment demographics.
