The word extends to any long, narrow space—a corridor, a covered walkway, or an upper level of seating in a theater or church.
The gallery in a theater holds the cheapest seats, giving rise to playing to the gallery—performing for the least sophisticated audience.
In golf, the gallery is the crowd of spectators following play.
