reference tool
Knowledge lookup resource
A reference tool is any resource used to look up information rather than read continuously—dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, indexes, databases.
The term emphasizes function over format: a physical book, website, or app can all serve as reference tools.
Keep a grammar reference tool handy when you write.
