Frankish Empire

Charlemagne's medieval domain

The Frankish Empire was the realm of the Franks, a Germanic people who dominated much of Western Europe from the 5th through 9th centuries.

Under Charlemagne, it reached its greatest extent, encompassing modern France, Germany, and northern Italy.

His coronation as Holy Roman Emperor in 800 CE marked a symbolic revival of Roman imperial authority in the West.
