Dimetrodon

Permian sail lizard

Dimetrodon is an extinct animal from the Permian period, often mistaken for a dinosaur but actually a synapsid—more closely related to mammals than to reptiles.

It's recognizable by the large sail-like fin on its back, supported by elongated spines.

The creature was a dominant predator roughly 280 million years ago, long before dinosaurs appeared.
