Cyril and Methodius
Byzantine missionary brothers
Cyril and Methodius were ninth-century Byzantine missionaries who brought Christianity to the Slavic peoples.
Brothers from Thessaloniki, they created the Glagolitic alphabet to translate religious texts into Old Church Slavonic, laying the foundation for the Cyrillic script that bears Cyril's name.
They are venerated as saints in both Eastern and Western churches, often called the "Apostles to the Slavs."
