Saint Augustine
Hippo's famous bishop
Saint Augustine refers to two influential figures in Christian history.
The more prominent is Augustine of Hippo (354–430 CE), a North African theologian whose writings on original sin, divine grace, and predestination shaped Western Christianity for centuries.
His *Confessions* remains a foundational spiritual autobiography.
The other is Augustine of Canterbury, the Benedictine monk who brought Christianity to Anglo-Saxon England in 597 CE.
Saint Augustine is also a city in northeastern Florida, the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the United States, founded by the Spanish in 1565.
