Cherbourg
French Channel port
Cherbourg is a port city on the northern tip of the Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy, France.
Its deep-water harbor has made it strategically important throughout history—a major naval base and, after D-Day in 1944, a crucial Allied supply port.
Today it serves as a ferry terminal connecting France to Britain and Ireland: We caught the ferry from Cherbourg to Portsmouth.
