Canopus

After Sirius, brightest

Canopus is the second-brightest star in the night sky, located in the southern constellation Carina.

Visible primarily from the Southern Hemisphere, it served as an important navigation star for ancient sailors and remains a reference point for spacecraft orientation systems.

The star was named after a mythological Greek navigator who piloted the ship that carried Helen of Troy to Egypt.
