Californication
Sunbelt cultural colonization
Californication blends California with fornication, suggesting the spread of California's culture—particularly its superficiality, materialism, and entertainment industry values—to other places, corrupting or homogenizing them.
The term implies seduction followed by degradation: The strip malls and chain restaurants represented the Californication of the rural Southwest.
Popularized by the Red Hot Chili Peppers' 1999 album.
