Comstock Lode

Virginia City strike

The Comstock Lode was a massive deposit of silver and gold ore discovered in 1859 in western Nevada, near what became Virginia City.

It triggered a mining rush that rivaled the California Gold Rush and generated enormous wealth, helping finance the Union during the Civil War.

The name comes from Henry Comstock, a prospector who claimed partial ownership of the discovery.
