Balto

Nome's canine savior

Balto was a sled dog who became famous in 1925 for leading the final leg of a relay that delivered diphtheria antitoxin serum to Nome, Alaska, during an epidemic.

The Siberian Husky's journey through brutal blizzard conditions made him a national hero, and a bronze statue of him stands in New York's Central Park.

His name has become shorthand for canine heroism and endurance against impossible odds.
