mushers

Dog team leaders

Mushers are people who drive dog sleds, commanding a team of dogs across snow and ice.

The term comes from the French *marche* (walk or go), which became the command "mush" shouted to start the dogs moving.

Mushing is both a traditional mode of Arctic transportation and a competitive sport: The mushers lined up for the Iditarod starting gun.
