Arabists
Middle East experts
Arabists are scholars who specialize in Arabic language, literature, and culture, or more broadly in the study of Arab societies and the Middle East.
The term also describes diplomats and intelligence officers with expertise in Arab affairs: The State Department's Arabists warned against the intervention.
Critics sometimes use the term disparagingly to suggest excessive sympathy for Arab positions over Western or Israeli interests.
