Battle of Lepanto
Ottoman fleet defeated
The Battle of Lepanto was a major naval engagement fought on October 7, 1571, in the Gulf of Patras off western Greece, where a coalition of Catholic states called the Holy League decisively defeated the Ottoman Empire's fleet.
The victory halted Ottoman expansion in the western Mediterranean and became a celebrated symbol of Christian triumph in European culture.
The Battle of Lepanto marked the last great galley battle in history.
