Absinthe

Anise-flavored liqueur

Absinthe is a potent green liquor flavored with anise and wormwood.

It was banned in many countries in the early twentieth century due to fears about the psychoactive effects of thujone, a compound in wormwood—fears that proved largely unfounded.

The bans have since been lifted in most places.

Absinthe was associated with bohemian artists and writers in nineteenth-century Paris: He drank absinthe like Toulouse-Lautrec.
