near beer

Prohibition-era compromise

Near beer is a malt beverage with little or no alcohol, designed to resemble beer in taste and appearance.

The term gained currency during Prohibition, when American breweries produced low-alcohol alternatives to stay in business.

Today it describes any beer-like drink under 0.5% alcohol: He ordered a near beer since he was driving.
