yarder

Forest timber mover

A yarder is logging equipment—a system of cables, pulleys, and a tall spar used to haul logs from where they're felled to a landing area.

The term also refers to the machine housing this system.

In casual use, yarder describes something measuring about a yard: He caught a twenty-yarder for the first down.

In cricket and baseball contexts, a yarder often means a home run or long hit.
