woodchuck

Marmot of America

A woodchuck is a stocky North American rodent that burrows in the ground, also called a groundhog.

Woodchucks hibernate through winter and emerge in early spring—hence Groundhog Day, when the creature supposedly predicts the season's length.

The tongue-twister How much wood would a woodchuck chuck? plays on the name, though woodchucks don't actually chuck wood.
