wolfhound

Tall Irish canine

A wolfhound is a large, powerful dog bred originally to hunt wolves.

The term usually refers to the Irish wolfhound, among the tallest of all dog breeds, though Scottish deerhounds and Russian borzois are sometimes called wolfhounds.

Despite their imposing size, they're typically gentle and even-tempered: The wolfhound barely fit on the couch.
