white squares
Chess board's light
White squares are the lighter-colored spaces on a checkerboard or chessboard, alternating with dark squares to create the characteristic grid pattern.
The term appears in chess notation and puzzles: The bishop moves only on white squares.
By extension, any alternating pattern of light and dark spaces may have white squares.
