checkered pattern
Grid of contrasts
A checkered pattern consists of alternating squares in two contrasting colors, typically arranged in rows where each square shares edges with squares of the opposite color.
The classic example is the black-and-white checkerboard used in chess and checkers.
The pattern appears on racing flags, taxi cabs, and diner floors: The kitchen had a checkered pattern in red and white.
