white ball

Billiards striking sphere

A white ball is the cue ball in billiards, pool, and snooker—the ball players strike with their cue stick to hit the colored or numbered balls.

Unlike target balls, the white ball has no point value and must remain on the table; pocketing it is a foul called scratching.

In cricket, white ball refers to limited-overs formats (One Day Internationals and T20s) that use a white ball instead of the traditional red, distinguishing them from Test cricket.
