shush

Library reproof sound

Shush is a command to be quiet, softer than "shut up" but more insistent than "shhh": She shushed the children during the movie.

The word imitates the hissing sound people make to signal silence.

As a verb, to shush someone is to quiet them, sometimes with a gesture: He shushed me before I could finish.
