whale stranding
Marine mammal grounding
Whale stranding is when whales beach themselves or become trapped in shallow water, unable to return to deeper ocean.
Mass strandings involve multiple animals, sometimes entire pods.
The phenomenon remains partly mysterious—causes include illness, navigational errors, sonar interference, and following a distressed pod member into danger.
Volunteers worked through the night to keep the stranded whales wet.
