whaled
Pounded without mercy
Whaled is the past tense of whale, which has two distinct meanings.
One refers to hunting whales: They whaled in the North Atlantic for decades.
The other, informal sense means to strike forcefully or repeatedly: He whaled on the punching bag, She whaled away at the keyboard.
This second sense may derive from wale (to mark with welts) rather than the marine mammal.
