near-drowning

Survived underwater too long

Near-drowning is survival, at least temporarily, after suffocation in water.

The term distinguishes cases where the victim is resuscitated or rescued before death occurs: The child was hospitalized after a near-drowning incident at the pool.

Medical professionals may track near-drowning separately from drowning deaths to study prevention and treatment outcomes.
