wet market

Open-air food stalls

A wet market is an open-air market selling fresh meat, fish, produce, and live animals.

The name comes from the water used to wash floors, ice melting from seafood displays, and produce being sprayed to stay fresh.

Common throughout Asia and other regions, wet markets contrast with supermarkets and dry goods stores.

They gained Western attention during disease outbreaks traced to live animal sections: The virus may have originated in a wet market in Wuhan.
