webhooks

Server-to-server pings

Webhooks are automated messages sent from one application to another when a specific event occurs.

Rather than repeatedly checking for updates, a system registers a URL to receive data automatically: The payment processor uses webhooks to notify your server when a transaction completes.

The term combines "web" with "hook" in the programming sense of intercepting events.

Common in software integration, webhooks enable real-time communication between services without constant polling.
