waterweeds
Submerged lake vegetation
Waterweeds are aquatic plants that grow submerged or floating in freshwater—ponds, lakes, streams, and aquariums.
The term often carries a negative connotation, suggesting unwanted growth that clogs waterways or chokes out other life: The lake was thick with waterweeds by midsummer.
In aquarium keeping, waterweeds may be cultivated deliberately to oxygenate tanks.
