quilt top
Blanket's decorative face
A quilt top is the decorative upper layer of a quilt, typically assembled from pieced fabric in patterns before being layered with batting and backing.
Quilters often complete the quilt top as a separate project: I finished the quilt top but haven't started quilting it yet.
The term distinguishes the patterned surface from the finished, layered quilt.
