volcanic lakes
Magma-heated mountain pools
Volcanic lakes form in craters, calderas, or other depressions created by volcanic activity.
The water may come from rainfall, groundwater, or melting snow accumulating where eruptions once occurred.
Some volcanic lakes are acidic or thermally heated by underlying magma: The volcanic lake's turquoise color comes from dissolved minerals.
Crater Lake in Oregon is among the most famous examples.
