volcanic bombs

Airborne molten projectiles

Volcanic bombs are masses of molten rock ejected during an eruption that solidify in flight, typically larger than a fist.

Their shapes—spindle, ribbon, bread-crust—result from rotation and cooling as they travel through the air.

Distinguished from smaller volcanic debris like ash and lapilli by their size, bombs can travel considerable distances before impact: Volcanic bombs the size of refrigerators littered the mountainside.
