ash plume
Gray volcanic cloud
An ash plume is a column of volcanic ash and gas rising from an erupting volcano, sometimes extending miles into the atmosphere.
These plumes pose hazards to aircraft engines and can spread ash over vast distances: Flights were grounded across Europe when the ash plume drifted south.
The term occasionally describes similar columns from large fires or industrial explosions.
