string quartets
Four-player chamber groups
String quartets is the plural of string quartet, an ensemble of four musicians playing stringed instruments—typically two violins, a viola, and a cello.
The term also refers to compositions written for such a group: Beethoven's string quartets are cornerstones of the chamber music repertoire.
The form emerged in the eighteenth century and remains central to classical music.
