vice-chancellor

Academic institution head

A vice-chancellor is the chief executive officer of a university, particularly in British, Australian, and other Commonwealth systems.

The title is confusing because it sounds subordinate, but the chancellor is typically a ceremonial figurehead while the vice-chancellor runs daily operations.

In American universities, the equivalent role is usually called president, though some systems use vice-chancellor for campus heads within a larger university system.

The vice-chancellor announced new funding for research facilities.
