Upstaters are people who live in or come from the upstate region of a state, particularly New York.
The term distinguishes residents of northern and rural areas from those in the major metropolitan centers, especially New York City.
The upstaters voted differently than the city dwellers on the referendum.
The designation often carries connotations of cultural and political differences between urban and rural populations within the same state.
