downstaters
Those from below
Downstaters are people who live in the southern or lower portion of a state, from the perspective of those in the north.
The term appears most often in New York, where upstaters use it for residents of New York City and its suburbs, and in Illinois, where it refers to anyone outside the Chicago area: The downstaters vote differently on agricultural issues.
