string trio
Violin, viola, cello
A string trio is a chamber music ensemble of three string instruments, typically violin, viola, and cello.
The term also refers to compositions written for such a group.
String trios occupy a middle ground between the intimacy of a duet and the fuller sound of a string quartet: Beethoven's string trios remain central to the repertoire.
