unquoting

Stripping citation marks

Unquoting is the act of closing a quotation or exiting quoted material.

In programming and command-line contexts, unquoting means removing quotation marks or escaping from a quoted string to return to normal evaluation: The macro requires unquoting the variable to expand it.

In speech, "unquote" signals the end of quoted material, often paired with "quote" at the start.
