turnout gear

Firefighter protective clothing

Turnout gear is the protective clothing firefighters wear when responding to fires and other emergencies—helmet, coat, pants, boots, and gloves designed to resist extreme heat and flame.

The name comes from firefighters "turning out" (mobilizing) for a call.

Also called bunker gear: The crew grabbed their turnout gear and headed for the truck.
