tunnage

Vessel cargo measurement

Tunnage is an older spelling of tonnage—the cargo capacity of a ship or the total shipping of a port or nation, measured in tons.

The spelling reflects the word's origin in the size of wine casks (tuns) that a vessel could carry.

Modern usage strongly favors tonnage.
