tunafish

Salad sandwich filling

Tunafish is simply tuna—the large oceanic fish or its flesh prepared as food.

The redundant compound (tuna already means the fish) emerged in American English, perhaps to distinguish the canned product from pet food or to emphasize edibility: a tunafish sandwich, tunafish salad.

The single word tuna is more common in formal contexts.
