tufts
Small held clusters
Tufts are small clusters or bunches of something soft or flexible—threads, hair, feathers, grass—growing or held together at the base: tufts of hair poked out from under his cap, tufts of grass between the paving stones.
The verb tuft means to form or secure with tufts, as in tufted upholstery where buttons create dimpled patterns. (Capitalized Tufts is the university.)
