trisecting
Cutting three ways
Trisecting means dividing into three equal parts.
The term appears most often in geometry, where trisecting an angle—constructing lines that divide it into three equal angles using only compass and straightedge—was proven impossible in the 19th century: He spent years trying to trisect the angle before learning it couldn't be done.
More generally, any line or shape can be trisected: trisecting the segment into thirds.
