Tranny is informal shortening of two words.
As a clipping of transmission, it refers to a car's gearbox: The tranny's shot—it'll cost two grand to replace.
As a clipping of transsexual or transgender, it's a slur when used by outsiders, though some trans people use it among themselves.
Context usually makes clear which sense is intended.
