trail hand

Herd-moving cowboy

A trail hand is a cowboy who works cattle drives, moving herds over long distances to market or new grazing land.

The term evokes the American West of the 19th century, when drives along routes like the Chisholm Trail employed large crews: He signed on as a trail hand for the drive north to Kansas.
