thoughtcrimes

Forbidden inner beliefs

Thoughtcrimes are beliefs or opinions treated as punishable offenses—the idea that wrong thinking itself is criminal.

The term comes from George Orwell's *1984*, where the totalitarian state prosecutes citizens for unapproved thoughts.

Now used critically to describe perceived overreach in policing speech or belief: Disagreeing with the official narrative has become a thoughtcrime.

Often invoked sarcastically against cancel culture or ideological conformity.
