text art
ASCII picture making
Text art is visual imagery created using typed characters—letters, numbers, symbols, and punctuation arranged to form pictures, patterns, or designs.
The term covers everything from elaborate ASCII portraits to simple emoticons like :) and decorative borders in emails.
Text art emerged from the constraints of early computing, when screens could only display characters, not graphics.
It persists in contexts where images aren't practical: She added some text art flourishes to her forum signature.
